Overview

Reglitazar is a dual peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonist, specifically targeting both PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma subtypes. It was developed as an insulin sensitizer for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and related metabolic disorders. The mechanism of action involves activation of PPAR-alpha, which lowers triglycerides and improves lipid profiles, and activation of PPAR-gamma, which enhances insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. Reglitazar was investigated in clinical trials for its potential to manage hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in patients with type 2 diabetes but development was discontinued due to safety concerns related to cardiovascular risk.
