Overview
*Rehmannia glutinosa*, commonly known as Chinese Foxglove or Di Huang, is a perennial herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In clinical contexts, particularly in China, it is investigated for its potential to treat chronic hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis, especially in patients presenting with the TCM syndrome of yin deficiency and internal heat. The herb is thought to exert therapeutic effects by modulating the gut-liver axis, specifically by increasing the levels of beneficial gut bacteria such as *Bifidobacterium longum*, which in turn may help reduce blood ammonia levels and improve overall liver function. It contains various bioactive compounds, including iridoid glycosides (such as catalpol), phenylethanoid glycosides, and polysaccharides, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties.
