Overview

Rejuvenated and washed autologous red blood cells are an investigational **autologous blood-product transfusion intervention** studied by Duke University in healthy volunteers with donation-induced anemia. A participant's stored red blood cell unit is incubated ex vivo with Rejuvesol red blood cell processing solution, then washed before intravenous reinfusion. Rejuvenation restores red-cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate and adenosine triphosphate depleted during storage, increasing hemoglobin p50 toward normal and improving oxygen unloading to tissues. In the Duke pilot study NCT03089047, the intervention was evaluated against standard stored autologous red blood cell transfusion using maximal oxygen uptake as a physiologic measure of oxygen-delivery benefit.
