Relamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide and potent ghrelin receptor (growth hormone secretagogue receptor, GHSR) agonist developed for the treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders, particularly diabetic gastroparesis and chronic idiopathic constipation. It acts by mimicking the effects of ghrelin, stimulating gastric emptying and colonic transit with greater potency and stability than native ghrelin. Relamorelin increases plasma growth hormone levels and has been shown to improve symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, abdominal pain, and fullness in clinical trials. The drug is administered subcutaneously and has demonstrated efficacy in accelerating gastric emptying in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus who have upper GI symptoms. As of recent years, it has reached phase III clinical trials for diabetic gastroparesis but does not yet have regulatory approval[1][3][4][5][7].
