Overview

Relfovetmab (brand name Portela) is a felinized monoclonal antibody developed by Zoetis for the alleviation of pain associated with osteoarthritis in cats. As a biologic therapeutic, it specifically targets and neutralizes nerve growth factor (NGF), a key signaling protein involved in the transmission and sensitization of chronic pain. By inhibiting the binding of NGF to tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) receptors located on immune cells and peripheral nerves, relfovetmab prevents the release of proinflammatory mediators and reduces the perception of pain. The drug is designed as a long-acting therapy, administered via a single injection that provides approximately three months of continuous pain relief, representing a significant advancement in feline pain management.
