Overview

Relitaz is a purified, standardized allergen preparation derived from honey bee (*Apis mellifera*) venom, developed by Allergopharma GmbH & Co. KG for use in venom immunotherapy (VIT). It is indicated for the treatment of patients with a history of systemic allergic reactions to bee stings and demonstrated IgE-mediated sensitivity. The therapy involves a build-up phase of increasing subcutaneous injections followed by a maintenance phase. Relitaz works by inducing immune tolerance, shifting the immune response from an IgE-mediated Th2 profile toward a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) dominated profile. This modulation results in the production of allergen-specific blocking IgG4 antibodies and inhibitory cytokines like IL-10, which prevent mast cell and basophil degranulation upon future stings, thereby reducing the risk of anaphylaxis.
