Overview

REMaST (Regenerative Educated Macrophages Self Transplantation) is an autologous cell therapy developed by Hemera, an Italian biotech company and spin-off from the University of Verona and University of Milan. The therapy utilizes autologous macrophages derived from the patient's own blood, which are subjected to a patented 7-day in vitro 'education' protocol. This protocol mimics a hostile microenvironment to prime the macrophages for therapeutic action. Once re-administered to the site of a traumatic complete spinal cord injury during the subacute phase (2-8 weeks post-injury), these educated macrophages are designed to modulate the local immune and inflammatory response, reduce glial scar formation, enhance neuronal survival, and promote axonal regrowth and nervous tissue regeneration. REMaST has received Orphan Drug Designation from the EMA.
