Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Remazolam tosylate is a short-acting, ultra-rapid-onset benzodiazepine derivative developed by Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. It acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor. Unlike traditional benzodiazepines like midazolam, remazolam is an ester-based drug, meaning it is rapidly metabolized by non-specific tissue esterases into an inactive metabolite, allowing for predictable and quick recovery from sedation. It was first approved in China in 2019 for the induction and maintenance of sedation during medical procedures such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and has since been explored for general anesthesia and sedation in intensive care settings.
