Overview

REMD refers to a class of human monoclonal antibodies, exemplified by REMD 2.59 and REMD-477, developed by REMD Biotherapeutics. These antibodies function as competitive antagonists of the glucagon receptor (GcgR). They are being investigated for their therapeutic potential in metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and diabetic cardiomyopathy. Their mechanism involves suppressing hepatic glucose production, improving glycemia, enhancing insulin action, and increasing AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated lipid oxidation, which contributes to cardioprotection.
