Overview
Remdesivir is a broad-spectrum antiviral medication developed by Gilead Sciences. It is a phosphoramidite prodrug of a 1'-cyano-substituted adenosine nucleotide analogue. Remdesivir is primarily used to treat COVID-19 (caused by SARS-CoV-2) in both hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients at high risk for progression to severe disease. The drug works by inhibiting the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), thereby interfering with viral replication. After entering cells, remdesivir is metabolized to its active triphosphate form, which competes with ATP for incorporation into viral RNA, leading to delayed chain termination during RNA synthesis[1][5][7][8].
