Remygen is a proprietary controlled-release oral formulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) developed by Diamyd Medical. GABA is a key cell signaling molecule in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans and has been shown to influence both insulin and glucagon secretion. Remygen is being investigated primarily for its potential to regenerate endogenous insulin production and improve hormonal counter-regulatory responses in individuals with long-standing type 1 diabetes. Preclinical studies suggest that GABA can stimulate the growth and function of pancreatic beta cells (insulin-producing) and alpha cells (glucagon-producing), while clinical trials have demonstrated improved protective hormonal responses against hypoglycemia during treatment. The drug may also be evaluated in combination with alprazolam, a GABA receptor modulator, to enhance its effects on beta cell function[1][3][5][6].
