ReN002 is an experimental cell therapy program developed by ReNeuron for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. The therapy utilized a proprietary microencapsulation technology acquired from AmCyte Inc., which was designed to protect transplanted insulin-producing cells from the host's immune system. By encapsulating cells—such as porcine islet cells or stem cell-derived insulin-secreting cells—in a biocompatible material, the treatment aimed to restore endogenous insulin production and glycemic control without the requirement for systemic immunosuppression. The program was eventually discontinued as ReNeuron shifted its strategic focus toward its neural stem cell platforms for stroke (ReN001) and retinal diseases (ReN003).
