Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Renasol is a hemodialysis dialysate concentrate (liquid acid concentrate) manufactured by Cantel Medical (now a subsidiary of STERIS). It is used in conjunction with a sodium bicarbonate concentrate in three-stream hemodialysis machines to create the final dialysate solution used during treatment. The concentrate contains a precise formulation of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and acetate, often with dextrose. In clinical research, such as trials conducted by Brigham and Women's Hospital, Renasol is utilized to evaluate the physiological effects of varying dialysate sodium concentrations (e.g., 142 mmol/L vs. 138 mmol/L) on intra-dialytic hypotension (IDH) and biomarkers of cardiac ischemia in hospitalized chronic hemodialysis patients. By manipulating the osmotic gradient through sodium concentration adjustments, clinicians aim to stabilize blood pressure and reduce myocardial stunning during the dialysis procedure.
