Overview
Renshu Changle (RSCL) is a Chinese herbal formula developed by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) specifically for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). It represents a significant milestone as the first traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) developed by a Hong Kong institution to receive clinical trial approval from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China. The formula is designed to address the TCM pattern of "spleen deficiency and liver stagnation," which manifests as abdominal pain, stool urgency, and frequent bowel movements. Mechanistically, RSCL is thought to modulate the brain-gut axis, regulate serotonin (5-HT) signaling in the intestinal mucosa, and improve gut microbiota diversity, thereby reducing visceral hypersensitivity and restoring intestinal barrier function.
