Drug intelligence / Profile preview
RenThyroid is a prescription desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) developed and manufactured by Genus Lifesciences. Derived from porcine thyroid glands, it contains a standardized combination of the active thyroid hormones levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3), with each 60 mg of product providing approximately 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. It is indicated as a natural hormone replacement therapy for hypothyroidism of various etiologies, including primary, secondary, and tertiary hypothyroidism, as well as myxedema and cretinism. Additionally, RenThyroid is utilized as a pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppressant in the management of thyroid nodules, goiters, and thyroid cancer. The drug functions by providing exogenous hormones that bind to nuclear thyroid hormone receptors, thereby regulating metabolic processes and gene expression normally managed by endogenous thyroid secretions.
