Overview

Reposal is a barbiturate derivative that was developed and marketed in the 1960s, primarily by the Danish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck. It functions as a hypnotic and sedative agent. Chemically, it is 5-ethyl-5-(bicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-en-2-yl)barbituric acid. Like other members of the barbiturate class, Reposal acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, increasing the duration of chloride channel opening in response to GABA, which leads to central nervous system depression. It was clinically evaluated for the treatment of insomnia and for its pharmacodynamic activity in the early 1960s. However, its clinical use has been largely discontinued in favor of safer alternatives such as benzodiazepines.
