Overview

Rescinnamine is an indole alkaloid and small molecule antihypertensive drug originally isolated from the plant *Rauwolfia serpentina* and related species[1][4][5]. It acts primarily as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor by binding to and inhibiting ACE; this blocks the conversion of angiotensin I to the vasoconstrictor angiotensin II[1][2][6]. The resulting decrease in angiotensin II leads to reduced aldosterone secretion and vasoconstriction—ultimately lowering blood pressure[2][6]. Rescinnamine was developed for the treatment of hypertension but has been withdrawn from many markets; its mechanism may also involve catecholamine depletion similar to reserpine due to structural similarity[3][5].
