Overview

Resiquimod is a synthetic imidazoquinolinamine and immune response modifier that acts as an agonist of Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) and Toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8). By binding to these receptors, primarily on dendritic cells, macrophages, and B lymphocytes, it activates the TLR signaling pathway. This leads to nuclear translocation of NF-kB and other transcription factors, resulting in increased production of cytokines such as interferon-alpha (IFN-a), which enhances T-helper 1 (Th1) immune responses. Topically applied resiquimod also activates Langerhans' cells in the skin, further stimulating T-cell activation. It has been investigated for use as a topical gel in treating skin lesions caused by herpes simplex virus and cutaneous T cell lymphoma, with additional potential applications as a vaccine adjuvant due to its immunostimulatory properties[1][2][3][4][5][9].
