Overview

Resistant dextrin is a low-molecular-weight, water-soluble dietary fiber produced from starch sources such as corn, wheat, or tapioca through acid or enzymatic hydrolysis and heat treatment[1][2][5]. It consists of short-chain glucose polymers with glycosidic linkages that are highly resistant to hydrolysis by human digestive enzymes. As a result, it passes undigested into the large intestine where it acts as a prebiotic fiber—stimulating the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)[2][6]. Resistant dextrin has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels by delaying carbohydrate absorption in the small intestine and improving insulin sensitivity. It also supports lipid metabolism by lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides[1][6]. Additional benefits include promoting satiety for weight management, improving bowel regularity due to its bulking effect in the colon, reducing inflammation markers associated with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (T2D), and potentially supporting skin health via anti-glycation effects[1][4][6]. Resistant dextrin is widely used as a functional ingredient in foods such as beverages, cereals, protein bars, dairy products (including fermented milk), baby foods, nutritional supplements—and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for these uses[5].
