RespiliQ is an enteral carbon dioxide (CO2) absorber designed to facilitate gas exchange via the gastrointestinal tract, a concept referred to as "breathing via the gut." Developed by O11 biomedical GmbH, the product is a suspension of microspherules composed of calcium hydroxide and polyethylene, formulated in a 1.4 wt% guar gum solution. The mechanism of action involves the chemical absorption of CO2 by the calcium hydroxide within the microspherules as they transit through the gut. This non-pulmonary method of CO2 removal is intended for the management of hypercapnia and respiratory failure. Preclinical studies in large animal models (domestic pigs) have demonstrated that RespiliQ has a favorable safety profile and maintains consistent CO2 uptake efficacy over a six-week period without causing clinical abnormalities or gastrointestinal discomfort.
