Overview

Respiratory Syncytial Virus B (RSV-B) is a live viral challenge agent (inoculum) used in controlled human infection challenge (CHIC) studies. Specifically, the RSV B-I54 strain is utilized by Imperial College London in the CHIRP02 study to evaluate immune responses in healthy older adults (aged 65–75 years). Unlike a therapeutic drug or vaccine, this agent is intranasally administered to deliberately induce a mild-to-moderate RSV infection, allowing researchers to monitor viral shedding, symptomatology, and age-related immune dynamics in a controlled environment. The program is led by Professor Christopher Chiu and supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and GSK.
