Overview

The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Fusion (F) protein subunit is a critical viral surface glycoprotein that mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, a crucial step for viral entry and infection. It exists in two main conformations: a metastable pre-fusion (PreF) state and a stable post-fusion state. The PreF conformation is particularly important as it exposes key neutralizing epitopes, making it a primary target for the development of vaccines and antiviral therapies against RSV. By targeting the F protein, therapeutic interventions aim to inhibit viral entry and replication, thereby preventing or reducing the severity of RSV infections. Approved vaccines, such as Abrysvo (Pfizer) and Arexvy (GSK), utilize the prefusion F protein to induce protective immune responses.
