Overview

Respiratory syncytial virus immunoglobulin is a **human plasma-derived immunoglobulin preparation containing high titers of antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)**. It is administered intravenously and was developed for the prevention of severe RSV infection in high-risk infants, particularly those with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital heart disease, or prematurity. The product is primarily composed of IgG with trace amounts of IgA and IgM, and undergoes viral inactivation steps. Its primary mechanism is passive immunization via neutralization of RSV, thereby preventing infection or reducing severity. It is no longer widely marketed due to newer monoclonal antibody products, but evidence supports its effectiveness in decreasing hospitalization and ICU admissions when used as prophylaxis during RSV seasons[1][5].
