Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Resveratrol 1% gel is a topical formulation of the natural polyphenolic compound resveratrol, currently being evaluated for the treatment of melasma. Resveratrol is a stilbenoid found in grapes and berries that possesses potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin-lightening properties. Its primary mechanism in treating hyperpigmentation involves the inhibition of tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin synthesis, as well as the down-regulation of tyrosinase-related proteins 1 and 2 (TRP-1 and TRP-2). Additionally, resveratrol acts as a SIRT1 activator, which may provide cytoprotective benefits against UV-induced skin damage. This specific 1% gel formulation was developed for clinical evaluation by Assiut University in split-face studies to compare its efficacy and safety profile against traditional chemical peeling agents such as 20% trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
