Overview

Rethymic (allogeneic processed thymus tissue-agdc) is a regenerative medicine therapy developed by Enzyvant Therapeutics (a Sumitomo Pharma company) for the treatment of pediatric patients with congenital athymia, a rare and fatal condition often associated with complete DiGeorge syndrome. The therapy consists of human thymus tissue that is processed and cultured to remove donor T cells while preserving the thymic epithelial structure. Once surgically implanted into the quadriceps muscle of the recipient, the tissue provides a functional microenvironment where the patient's own bone marrow-derived T-cell progenitors can migrate, mature, and differentiate into functional T cells, thereby reconstituting the immune system. It was approved by the FDA in 2021 as the first thymus-based regenerative medicine product.
