Retigabine + antiepileptic drugs refers to the **combination therapy** of retigabine (also known as ezogabine) with other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) for the treatment of epilepsy, particularly refractory or drug-resistant forms. Retigabine is a third-generation AED with a unique mechanism: it enhances neuronal potassium currents by **activating KCNQ (Kv7) potassium channels**, leading to reduced neuronal excitability. It does not significantly affect cytochrome P450 enzymes, showing low potential for pharmacokinetic interaction with other AEDs[1][3]. In combination regimens, retigabine is typically used as adjunctive therapy with other AEDs such as valproic acid, topiramate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, and others. Clinical and preclinical studies show that retigabine combinations generally produce additive to synergistic anticonvulsant effects and are well-tolerated, though certain combinations can alter drug clearance or plasma levels.
