Retinaldehyde is a naturally occurring derivative of vitamin A (retinoid family) and is also known as retinal. It acts as a biological precursor between retinol (vitamin A alcohol) and retinoic acid (the biologically active form of vitamin A). In the skin and other tissues, retinaldehyde is converted by retinal dehydrogenase to retinoic acid, which acts on retinoic acid receptors and retinoid X receptors to regulate gene expression, cell differentiation, and cell growth. Topically applied, retinaldehyde accelerates cell turnover, boosts collagen production, reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, while also possessing antibacterial activity useful in acne and congestion. In vision, retinaldehyde serves as the chromophore for opsin proteins in the retina, enabling photoreception and visual transduction[1][2][3][5][6][7].
