Overview

Retinol is a fat-soluble vitamin in the vitamin A family, also known as vitamin A1. It is essential for vision, cellular development, maintenance of skin and mucous membranes, immune function, and reproductive health. Retinol can be obtained from dietary sources such as fish, dairy products, and meat or used as a dietary supplement to treat and prevent vitamin A deficiency. In medicine and skincare, retinol is widely used topically to stimulate cell turnover and collagen production—helping reduce wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), acne lesions/scars, and improve overall skin texture. Retinol must be converted in the body to its active forms (retinaldehyde/retinoic acid) to exert its biological effects. It is available over-the-counter in various creams/serums for anti-aging or acne treatment; higher-concentration retinoids are prescription-only due to increased potency and risk of irritation[1][2][3][4][6].
