Overview

**Retinol** is a vitamin A alcohol and topical retinoid precursor evaluated by Johns Hopkins University as a 1.0% cream for moderate-to-severe photodamaged skin and wrinkles. In skin, retinol is enzymatically converted to retinaldehyde and then all-trans-retinoic acid, which modulates retinoic acid receptor signaling to influence epidermal differentiation, keratinization, collagen homeostasis, and photoaging-associated skin changes. The registered Phase 2 trial compared retinol 1.0% cream with tretinoin 0.02% cream for wrinkles, dyspigmentation, roughness, and other signs of photodamage.
