Overview

Retinyl palmitate is an ester of retinol (vitamin A) and palmitic acid, serving as a major storage form of vitamin A in the body. It is a fat-soluble compound involved in supporting vision, immune function, skin health, growth, and reproduction. Retinyl palmitate acts by being converted into active forms of vitamin A such as retinoic acid and retinal that regulate gene expression through nuclear receptors affecting cell differentiation and proliferation. It is used to prevent or treat vitamin A deficiency conditions including night blindness and xerophthalmia. Topically, it has applications for improving photoaged skin quality and acne treatment due to its role in skin cell turnover. It can be administered orally or by injection for supplementation purposes[2][3][5][8].
