Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Retisert is an FDA-approved ophthalmic intravitreal implant containing 0.59 mg of **fluocinolone acetonide**, a synthetic corticosteroid. Developed by **Bausch & Lomb**, it is specifically indicated for the treatment of chronic non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment of the eye. The device is a non-biodegradable, sustained-release drug delivery system that is surgically sutured into the vitreous cavity through a pars plana incision. It is designed to provide a consistent release of the corticosteroid directly to the site of inflammation for approximately 30 months, thereby minimizing the need for frequent systemic or periocular steroid administration. As a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, fluocinolone acetonide inhibits the expression of inflammatory mediators and reduces vascular permeability. While highly effective in controlling inflammation, the implant is frequently associated with ocular side effects, most notably the development of cataracts and significant elevations in intraocular pressure, often requiring glaucoma-filtering surgery.
