Retoxin (YY001) is a recombinant botulinum toxin type A developed by Chongqing Claruvis Pharmaceutical for the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines. It represents a significant technological advancement as the world's first botulinum toxin produced through a recombinant E. coli expression system, moving away from traditional natural extraction methods. The drug functions by targeting the neuromuscular junction, where it cleaves the synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25). This action prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, leading to a temporary reduction in muscle activity and the smoothing of facial wrinkles. In Phase III clinical trials (REFINE study), Retoxin demonstrated superior efficacy compared to onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox), achieving a significantly higher composite response rate at week 4. It has received official marketing approval from China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA).
