Overview

RetroMTA is a hydraulic bioceramic dental material developed for vital pulp therapy and root repair. It is composed of fine, hydrophilic particles that set rapidly in the presence of water to form a strong, impermeable barrier. Unlike traditional mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), RetroMTA does not use Portland cement as a raw material and contains no heavy metals. Its main constituents are calcium carbonate, silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, and a calcium zirconia complex (used as contrast media). The setting time is approximately 150 seconds. RetroMTA demonstrates high sealing ability, excellent antibacterial effects, no discoloration even with blood contamination (making it suitable for aesthetic repairs), and low cytotoxicity within 48 hours. It has been shown to be effective in vital pulp therapy procedures such as pulp capping, pulpotomy, pulpectomy, apexogenesis, apexification, root-end filling during endodontic surgery or repair of root perforations[1][2][4][6][7][9]. Clinical studies indicate comparable efficacy to conventional MTA products for primary teeth pulpotomy and partial pulpotomy in permanent teeth[3][6].
