Overview

Retympa (NPC-18) is a regenerative medicine product developed by Nobelpharma for the treatment of chronic tympanic membrane perforation. It utilizes a tissue engineering approach that combines recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF, also known as trafermin) with a fibrin glue scaffold and a gelatin sponge. The bFGF component acts as a potent mitogen and chemoattractant for fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells, stimulating the proliferation and migration of cells necessary for tissue repair. The fibrin glue and gelatin sponge provide a temporary physical matrix that supports the growth of new tissue across the perforation. This treatment is designed to provide a non-surgical alternative for closing eardrum perforations, facilitating functional recovery of the tympanic membrane.
