Reutericyclin is a tetramic acid antibiotic produced by certain strains of *Limosilactobacillus reuteri* (formerly *Lactobacillus reuteri*)[8][1][10]. It is a small molecule with the molecular formula C20H31NO4 and a molecular weight of approximately 349 Da[6][8][10]. Reutericyclin acts as a proton ionophore, disrupting the transmembrane potential of susceptible bacteria by dissipating their proton gradient. This mechanism results in bacteriostatic or bactericidal activity specifically against Gram-positive bacteria; Gram-negative bacteria are resistant due to their outer membrane barrier[1][5][8]. Reutericyclin is heat and pressure stable, resistant to enzymatic proteolysis, and can be chemically modified for improved properties[4]. It has been investigated for use as an antimicrobial food preservative and as a probiotic-derived compound that may modulate gut microbiota and energy balance in animal models[3][7]. Its biosynthesis involves polyketide synthase (PKS) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) gene clusters in *L. reuteri*[8].
