Rev-5901 is a synthetic small molecule that functions as a potent and selective inhibitor of arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and also exhibits leukotriene receptor antagonist activity. Developed initially by the Revlon Health Care Group (Rorer Pharmaceuticals), it was investigated for its potential in treating asthma and inflammatory conditions by blocking the biosynthesis and action of leukotrienes, which are key mediators in allergic and inflammatory responses. In recent research, Rev-5901 has been utilized as a reference compound in the study of 5-LOX inhibition for oncology, specifically in colorectal carcinoma, where it has been shown to induce apoptosis and autophagy in vitro, although it often lacks significant in vivo efficacy compared to newer analogs.
