rFPV-HIV gag-pol + interferon-gamma is a recombinant fowlpox virus (rFPV)-based therapeutic HIV vaccine candidate. It is engineered to express HIV-1 Gag and Pol antigens along with the cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which serves as a molecular adjuvant to enhance the immune response. Developed by the Kirby Institute, this vaccine aims to stimulate or boost HIV-specific cellular immunity, particularly CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell responses, in individuals already infected with HIV-1. It was evaluated in the Phase I/II VIR-201 Extension Study (NCT00332930) to determine its safety and its ability to control viral replication following the interruption of antiretroviral therapy (ART). The inclusion of IFN-γ is intended to provide additional immunostimulatory signals to optimize the T-cell response compared to the Gag-Pol antigens alone.
