RGD-IRDye800CW is a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging probe designed for the intraoperative detection of tumor margins and infiltrating cancer cells. It consists of an RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) peptide sequence, which has high binding specificity for the cell adhesion molecule integrin alpha-V/beta-3 (ITGAV/ITGB3), conjugated to the NIR fluorophore IRDye 800CW. Integrin alpha-V/beta-3 is significantly overexpressed in tumor neovasculature and invading tumor cells but is absent in quiescent vessels and normal cells. This targeting allows for real-time visualization of microscopic tumor cohorts during surgery, potentially improving the accuracy of tumor resection in cancers such as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The probe was developed by researchers at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology and is used in conjunction with wavelength-resolved NIR imaging systems.
