Overview

RGD peptide hydrogel is an experimental biologic therapy developed by researchers at Minia University for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. The formulation consists of the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide, a tripeptide motif that serves as a primary integrin-binding site for various extracellular matrix proteins, delivered within a carbopol-based hydrogel carrier. The RGD peptide acts as a cell adhesion molecule, specifically targeting and binding to integrin receptors on the surface of periodontal cells such as fibroblasts and osteoblasts. This binding facilitates cellular recruitment, adhesion, and proliferation at the site of the defect, thereby promoting periodontal tissue regeneration. In clinical trials, this hydrogel has been used as an adjunct to minimally invasive surgical techniques (MIST) to improve clinical attachment levels and bone fill in patients with stage III or IV periodontitis.
