RGL-185 is an investigational adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy developed by Shanghai Ruihongdi Medicine (Rehomed) for the treatment of radiotherapy-induced xerostomia (chronic dry mouth) in patients with a history of head and neck cancer. The therapy is administered via a single instillation into the parotid duct, delivering the human aquaporin-1 (hAQP1) gene to the salivary gland cells. Aquaporin-1 is a water channel protein; by inducing its expression in the radiation-resistant ductal cells of the salivary glands, RGL-185 aims to restore the glands' ability to transport water and produce saliva, thereby improving the quality of life for patients suffering from treatment-related salivary gland dysfunction.
