Overview

RH5.1 + Matrix-M is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate designed to prevent malaria caused by *Plasmodium falciparum*. The vaccine consists of RH5.1, a soluble recombinant version of the highly conserved parasite protein Reticulocyte-binding protein Homolog 5 (RH5), formulated with Novavax's saponin-based adjuvant, Matrix-M. RH5 is essential for the invasion of human red blood cells by the malaria parasite; the vaccine aims to elicit high titers of neutralizing antibodies that block this invasion process. Developed by the University of Oxford's Jenner Institute, the vaccine has undergone clinical testing in both malaria-naive adults and malaria-endemic populations, including infants, to assess safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy against blood-stage infection.
