Rhamnan sulfate is a sulfated polysaccharide extracted from green seaweed, specifically *Monostroma nitidum*, that acts as a mimetic of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as heparan sulfate. It is being investigated for its potential to rejuvenate and replace the endothelial glycocalyx, a protective interior lining of blood vessels that is often degraded during the development of atherosclerotic plaques. By restoring the glycocalyx barrier, rhamnan sulfate reduces the permeability of endothelial cells to LDL cholesterol and inhibits the activation of the NF-kappaB inflammatory pathway. Preclinical research in ApoE-/- mouse models has demonstrated that oral administration of rhamnan sulfate can significantly reduce atherosclerotic plaque area, lower plasma cholesterol levels, and improve non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) activity scores.
