Overview

Rhamnose is a naturally occurring deoxy sugar classified as either a methyl-pentose or a 6-deoxy-hexose. It predominantly occurs in nature in its L-form (L-rhamnose), which is unusual since most naturally occurring sugars are in the D-form. Rhamnose can be isolated from plants such as buckthorn (Rhamnus), poison sumac, and Uncaria species, as well as produced by certain microalgae and bacteria. It is commonly found bound to other sugars in plant glycosides and bacterial lipopolysaccharides. In humans, natural antibodies against L-rhamnose are present in serum[1][2][3].
