Overview

Rhamnus extract is a botanical preparation derived from plants of the genus *Rhamnus*, commonly known as buckthorns. These extracts, often prepared using solvents like methanol for research purposes, contain a variety of secondary metabolites, most notably anthraquinones such as emodin, frangulin, and cascarosides. While traditionally used as stimulant laxatives (e.g., Cascara sagrada), *Rhamnus* extracts are being explored for potential antineoplastic activity. Research presented at the AACR 2017 Annual Meeting indicated that methanolic extracts of *Rhamnus* exhibit inhibitory effects on the viability of several cancer cell lines, including lung (A549), colon (SW620 and Colo320), breast (BT549), and cervical (HeLa) cancers. The specific molecular mechanisms and clinical efficacy in oncology remain to be established.
