Drug intelligence / Profile preview
RHB-56 (also known as RHB56) is a novel small molecule analog developed by researchers at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as a potential anti-seizure agent for the treatment of epilepsy. Derived from the prototype lead compound IAA65, RHB-56 acts as an inhibitor of T-type voltage-gated calcium channels (T-VGCCs), specifically targeting the Ca_v 3.2 subunit. In vitro studies demonstrate that RHB-56 significantly reduces calcium currents generated by Ca_v 3.2 in a concentration-dependent manner by altering channel inactivation. The compound is undergoing preclinical evaluation in acute rodent seizure models to assess its efficacy and safety.
