Overview

**Rhein lysinate** is a water-soluble derivative of rhein, created by forming a lysine salt of the anthraquinone compound rhein. Rhein itself is a bioactive molecule found in rhubarb root and used in traditional Chinese medicine. Rhein lysinate has been developed to improve rhein’s poor water solubility and bioavailability, thus making it more suitable for pharmaceutical use. Mechanistically, rhein lysinate exerts anti-inflammatory effects primarily via inhibition of both TNF-α and IL-6, as well as blockade of NF-κB signaling. It also shows antioxidant properties and can prevent and treat diabetic complications by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing oxidative stress, and protecting kidney function in diabetic nephropathy models. Preclinical studies indicate it may also protect against age-associated inflammation and oxidative stress in neurodegeneration and improve metabolic disorders such as obesity-induced cognitive impairment.
