Rhenium-186-obisbemeda is a novel injectable radiotherapeutic agent developed for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) cancers. It consists of the radioisotope rhenium-186 chelated with BMEDA and encapsulated within a nanoliposome. The drug is designed to deliver highly targeted radiation directly to tumor sites in the CNS while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. Rhenium-186 emits both beta energy for therapeutic effect and gamma energy for real-time imaging of drug distribution and tumor targeting[1][8]. The agent is administered via direct intraventricular or intrathecal injection using an Ommaya reservoir, bypassing the blood-brain barrier and enabling precise delivery to tumors such as recurrent glioblastoma (GBM), leptomeningeal metastases (LM), and pediatric brain cancers[1][4]. In clinical trials, it has demonstrated significant tumor reduction with minimal toxicity compared to standard external beam radiation therapy[1][9].
