**Rhenium-188 hydroxyapatite** is an experimental particulate therapeutic radiopharmaceutical developed for intra-articular radiation synovectomy. It consists of hydroxyapatite particles labeled with the beta-emitting radionuclide rhenium-188. Following injection into an inflamed joint, the particles are intended to remain within the synovial cavity and deliver localized beta radiation that ablates hypertrophic, inflamed synovial tissue in rheumatoid arthritis and related inflammatory arthropathies. Published formulation and animal studies demonstrated high radiolabeling yields and joint retention, but an in-vitro comparison found substantial loss of radioactivity from the labeled hydroxyapatite particles in synovial fluid over five days, raising concerns about stability relative to rhenium-188 sulfur colloid.
