Rhenium-188-labeled microspheres are radiopharmaceutical particles designed for selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), also known as radioembolization, and radiation synovectomy. These microspheres are typically composed of materials such as human serum albumin (HSA) or biodegradable polymers like poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), which are labeled with the radioisotope rhenium-188. Rhenium-188 is a potent beta-emitter (maximum energy 2.12 MeV) with a half-life of 16.9 hours, making it suitable for delivering high-energy radiation to destroy malignant cells or inflamed synovial tissue. Additionally, its gamma emission (155 keV) allows for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging, facilitating dosimetry and treatment monitoring. In oncology, these microspheres are administered via the hepatic artery to treat hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastases by becoming trapped in the tumor's capillary bed. In rheumatology, they are used for radiation synovectomy to treat chronic joint inflammation.
