Rhenium-188 NanoLiposome Biodegradable Alginate Microsphere (188RNL-BAM) is an investigational radiopharmaceutical designed for the treatment of solid organ tumors, particularly primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and secondary liver cancers such as metastatic colorectal cancer. The drug consists of biodegradable alginate microspheres containing thousands of nanoliposomes loaded with the radioisotope Rhenium-188. Upon intra-arterial administration via trans-arterial radioembolization (TARE), these microspheres embolize tumor-feeding blood vessels while delivering targeted beta radiation to tumor tissue. The dual mechanism involves both vascular occlusion and localized radiotherapy, leading to selective tumor necrosis. The use of a biodegradable carrier allows for eventual restoration of blood flow and safe clearance from the body. Plus Therapeutics is developing this therapy in preclinical stages, with technology licensed from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio[1][2][3][4][5][6].
